Checks are back. But did they ever really disappear?
Checks are everywhere again for autumn 2026. We are seeing them on shirts, jackets, trousers and coats, from small classic checks to larger and more graphic patterns.
But to me, checks are not just a trend.
They are one of those patterns I keep coming back to, both in my own wardrobe and when designing new styles for AMOODE. Maybe because checks can take on so many different expressions.
They can feel classic, graphic, relaxed, slightly British or even have a touch of western influence, depending on the colours, fabric and how you style them.
And checks have one of the qualities I always look for when choosing fabrics for AMOODE: they can feel relevant right now without necessarily feeling outdated next year.
Autumn checks in 2026
Checks are a clear part of the autumn 2026 fashion picture, especially in deeper, more seasonal colour combinations.
Brown, red, green and grey tones give checks warmth and also make them easy to combine with many of the colours we already have in our wardrobes.
I always find it interesting to follow seasonal trends. Not because I think we need to replace our wardrobes every time fashion changes, but because new styling ideas, colour combinations and proportions can inspire us to wear what we already own in a different way.
Checks are a good example of this.
The pattern keeps returning in new interpretations, while still having a timeless quality that makes it relevant far beyond a single season.
Fabrics can have a little more character
As we move from late summer into autumn, the fabrics naturally change too.
I personally start looking for more texture, a little more weight and qualities that work well when layered. A woven checked cotton, a heavier shirting fabric or a textured jacket can make the transition between seasons much easier.
That does not necessarily mean summer clothes need to be packed away.
Quite the opposite.
A lightweight T-shirt can be layered with a checked shirt. A dress can be worn with a jacket over it. Later, a knit can be added on top of the shirt.
That is exactly how I like to build a wardrobe myself.
Checks at AMOODE
Checks have appeared in AMOODE collections several times over the years.
When I find a special checked deadstock fabric at one of our suppliers in Portugal, I first look at the colours, the quality and the possibilities within the fabric.
Will it work with denim? Black? Brown? A white T-shirt? Can the finished style be worn in several different ways?
Because AMOODE works with deadstock fabrics, each quality can only be produced in the quantity the fabric allows. This also means that a particular check or colour combination may only be available in the collection for a limited time.
It makes every fabric that little bit more special.
The checked shirt, a wardrobe classic
Shirts are an essential part of AMOODE and a style I return to again and again.
In my opinion, a good shirt should be able to do much more than suit one specific occasion. It should work throughout the year, worn on its own or layered, with jeans, tailored trousers or perhaps over a dress.
The same goes for the checked shirt.
In autumn, you can wear it buttoned up as a classic shirt or leave it open over a simple T-shirt or top. At AMOODE, you could for example pair it with an AVIO T-shirt or an ALANIS top.
As temperatures drop further, simply add a knit.
This way, an autumn wardrobe does not have to consist of lots of completely new outfits. Often, it is more about combining individual pieces in a new way.
How I style a checked shirt
1. Checks and denim
Probably the most classic combination and one of my personal favourites.
Style a checked shirt with a good pair of jeans and boots. You can add a simple T-shirt underneath and leave the shirt open as an extra layer.
If you want to give the look a little more character, you can lean into this season’s western influence with a belt, brown boots or another small accessory.
You do not need to go all in on the cowgirl look. One detail can be enough.
2. Checks with tailored trousers
A checked shirt can also look simple and polished.
Wear it buttoned up with black, dark brown or classic wide-leg trousers. Sneakers keep the look relaxed, while loafers or a simple boot make it more refined.
It is an easy combination for work, dinner or drinks with friends.
3. Soft knitwear over a checked shirt
When autumn gets colder, layering a knit over your shirt is an easy way to add warmth.
Let the collar, cuffs or a little of the shirt show underneath.
This makes the checks more of a subtle detail rather than the main focus of the outfit, and it is also a good way to wear a more noticeable checked shirt.
4. Wear the shirt as an extra layer
During transitional weather, I often use shirts as an extra layer rather than simply as shirts.
Leave it open over a T-shirt or top, roll the sleeves up slightly and wear it almost like a light overshirt.
This works particularly well with heavier shirting fabrics.
5. Checks over a simple dress
Do not necessarily put your simple dresses away just because autumn has arrived.
A checked shirt or jacket over a simple dress can completely change the look while allowing you to keep wearing the dress further into the season.
Add tights and boots later in the year, and you have another way to wear a piece that might otherwise feel like a summer style.
The checked jacket for transitional weather
A checked jacket can do something different from a plain one.
Because several shades often meet within the pattern, the jacket can tie together colours from the rest of your outfit. Maybe the brown is repeated in your boots, the black in your trousers or the lighter shade in your T-shirt.
That actually makes checks surprisingly easy to style.
I would wear a checked jacket over something very simple: a white T-shirt, a shirt, a lightweight knit or a plain top. Let the jacket be the piece that gives the outfit character.
Later in the season, you can simply add more layers underneath.
How to bring checks into your autumn wardrobe
My best advice is not to start with the trend. Start with your wardrobe.
Which trousers do you wear all the time? Which shoes do you automatically reach for? Which colours keep appearing?
If you already own a lot of denim, black, brown, grey or ecru, look for checks that include some of those shades.
That makes a new checked shirt or jacket much easier to combine with what you already own.
You certainly do not need an entire checked wardrobe just because the pattern is visible in fashion this autumn.
One good checked piece can be enough.
How do you choose checks you will still wear next year?
When I choose clothes for myself, or advise customers in our Kolding store, I often focus more on versatility than on the individual trend.
I would especially think about three things:
The colours: Do at least a few of the shades work with what you already own?
The fit: Is there room for a T-shirt or lightweight knit underneath so you can layer it?
The fabric: Is it a quality you enjoy wearing and will want to come back to again and again?
It may sound simple, but these are often the details that determine whether a style stays at the back of the wardrobe or becomes one of the pieces you naturally reach for.
Checks beyond one season
So yes, checks are one of the trends for autumn 2026.
But I do not think that is why I keep coming back to them.
What makes checks interesting is how much they can change depending on what you wear them with.
With jeans, they feel relaxed. With tailored trousers, more polished. Under a knit, they become a small detail. And next year, you may style the exact same shirt in a completely different way.
To me, that is a far more interesting way to think about a wardrobe.
Not necessarily more clothes, but more possibilities with the pieces you choose.
